Care for the environment and the communities VCU serves were taken into great consideration during the development and renovation of the VCU School of Pharmacy renovation. The project incorporated high standards for environmental, sustainability, and energy efficiency strategies to help attain the goal of LEED-CI Silver certification in June 2011.

The VCU School of Pharmacy is housed in the R. Blackwell Smith Jr. Building in Richmond, Virginia. The 21,500 SF interior renovation reflects the evolving changes in the Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics, and Medicinal Chemistry education, training, and research. The building is located on an urban site at the VCU Medical College of Virginia campus. Working closely with the School and VCU Facilities Staff as well as the Office of the Vice President for Health Sciences, the project team developed a detailed space and functional program for the School’s administration, faculty offices, classroom and teaching laboratories, and research laboratories.
 
The Dean’s Suite, currently located on the first floor of the building, was relocated to the fifth floor. The renovated first floor is completely student-centered, including a larger student lounge area and student café. Also on this floor are three conference rooms, two classrooms and four faculty and seminar rooms. The renovated second floor features a compound lab with expanded capacity and two large patient-interaction areas, each of which accommodates up to 52 students. The relocation of most of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry to Biotech One allows the Dean’s Suite to move to the fifth floor. The elevators open onto an Admissions reception/ waiting area and most of the dean’s offices, including a conference room. Medicinal Chemistry research space occupies the rest of the floor.
 
The largest challenge on this project was understanding the applicability of LEED 2009 Project Boundary requirements to LEED-CI projects in which the Owner is also the tenant, but renovation portions of the space. We submitted questions to GBCI (which administers LEED) and received guidance which ultimately was incorporated into a subsequent publication from GBCI concerning such projects. A constraint was effectively separating the spaces in which no work was performed from the spaces with construction to ensure good air quality in the unaffected spaces. The Contractor included plywood and plastic sheeting barriers which effectively sealed the areas off from the rest of the building.
