Learn about the 4 types of open air steel structures and how each canopy is beautifully engineered specific to the job. Explore the benefits of working with a specialty manufacture through a process called DEFI (Design, Engineer, Fabricate, Install). The process starts with an architect’s sketch (vision) and finishes with a world class structure. This is a fast paced one hour program designed to inspire.

Understand the difference between specialty manufacturers and conventional steel fabricators and learn how specialist help reducing the architect's scope, save time and money, while still achieving design intent.

This course is an introduction and overview to the rapidly emerging field of Zero Energy Buildings (ZEB). We will compare and contrast the different definitions of a ZEB as well as learn how to carry out zero energy calculations. Additionally, we will discuss commercial and residential strategies used to reach zero energy, renewable energy options, and the associated costs of ZEBs. Several ZEB case studies – both commercial and residential – will be analyzed throughout the course to highlight the information presented. This course is ideal for green building professionals and students interested in gaining an overview of ZEB.

What are zero energy buildings (ZEB)? Are they the same as net zero buildings (NZEB)? The topic of Zero Energy buildings is a rapidly growing field with a tremendous amount of information out there. Clearly distinguish between the different definitions of a Zero Energy Buildings and learn how to calculate if a building reaches Zero Energy for the different definitions. Last but not least, gain general insight into the associated costs for Zero Energy Buildings. Your journey to zero energy building begins with this course!

ASHRAE Standard 55 provides clear guidance on the conditions required for comfort, but unfortunately many designers do not fully understand how to use the data from that standard to design an effective enclosure that controls heat and air flow to promote occupant comfort. This session reviews the basics of how building envelopes can impact occupant comfort and provides design guidance for avoiding problems.

The building envelope can have significant impacts on occupant comfort, with improper design leading to issues such as excessive heat gain, noise or cold temperatures.

California has been a leader in bringing about changes relating to flame retardant chemicals, and others in North America and around the world can benefit from these changes. As of January 1, 2015 a new furniture flammability standard has been implemented and purchasers can now make a choice about whether the products they buy do or do not contain toxic flame retardant chemicals. The original flammability standard has been the defacto standard for all of North America, and it is critical for those outside of California to understand how to avail themselves of the new regulations.

This course will equip you with the latest information on the new regulations and will provide you with model purchasing language and easy to use tools to help your organization identify and procure safer products. Procuring flame retardant free furniture is a cost-neutral or even cost-saving option and will make a great sustainability story for your organization.

This course will be delivered by Judy Levin and Jean Hansen.

Judy has led the Center for Environmental Health’s flame retardant campaign for the past 7 years. She works closely with large purchasers including government, corporations, higher education and health care organizations on how to identify and prefer environmentally preferable products. Judy co-sponsored legislation to require manufacturers who sell into California to label their products for flame retardants. This legislation has had national impacts.

Jean Hansen is the Interiors Manager for HDR Architecture’s Sustainable Design Solutions team and firm globally; which is based in San Francisco, California with 30+ years of experience in interior design, planning and sustainable design. She is responsible for advancing HDR's sustainability initiatives in project and research work for healthcare, commercial and institutional environments. She has worked on the development of many nationally recognized sustainable resources and was a core committee member in the development of the USGBC’s LEED Healthcare rating system.

LEED in Fase di costruzione (Lezione 1)
SS Prerequisito Construction Activity Pollution Prevention

Taught in Italian, this course is specially designed for construction companies, supervision figures, LEED consultants and building owners. It is intended to facilitate projects teams worldwide to implement this prerequisite.

Many European projects face difficulties in decision making, particularly by the building owner, when it comes to Construction phase and LEED certification. Doubts are mainly related to unpreparedness of contracting companies to perform as per sustainability practices, as well as to lack of familiarity with different aspects like Erosion& Sedimentation Control Planning.

Erosion sedimentation control plan requirements in the US are contained in one guiding normative while In Europe those measures are described and regulated in many different directives. Therefore teams are having difficulties in creating documentation in systematic and pragmatic way.

This course is intended to transfer experiences gained by our team in role of LEED consultant and on different projects around Europe.

Beside explanations, regarding requirements in construction phase, practical examples of implementation on European LEED certified project will be given, as well as comparison in some cases with the local normative and regulations, forms, examples of the report, standard modules to use.

A team of engineers and designers will discuss how to best implement sustainable buildings from the design phase through the operations phase by focusing on the three main narratives of integrated design, construction commissioning, and ongoing performance tracking. By following up with the design of your building through the occupancy and performance period, the project can meet the requirements of Architecture 2030, improve the welfare and health of building occupants and can help the project become a marketing opportunity of proven performance tracked on sustainable design. This course is presented in three modules. Module 1 focuses on the Design Phase. Module 2 focuses on the Construction Phase, while Module 3 focuses on the Ongoing Performance Phase.
